I found Elseerian to be a very good book, though not great; hence, dropping one star. It is written in a bit of the grand style of Tolkien, although Hale's imagery does not quite rise to the level of the Trilogy, or even The Hobbit. Understand, though, that I am a hard grader. Few books earn 5 stars from me, just as very few earn 1 star from me.The main character is Taryn Elseerian, a half-elf half-human who knows nothing of his family's background. It seems his parents died in a shipwreck while coming to the island of Sri Rosen, where Taryn has been raised by an old elf swordmaster, Murai.
As amazing as Taryn is with multiple weapons and even fighting without weapons, he is notoriously mediocre or worse in any other area. Cooking, camping, and even social skills are difficult for him. In this way, Taryn is almost a refreshing change from the standard "all-everything" hero. If there is a flaw to Taryn's character as written, it would have to be that he is just so amazing at feats of strength, endurance, and fighting. More than once Taryn takes on a large group of adversaries, and emerges victorious each time. He is also able to break into an essentially impregnable fortress, where there are thousands of soldiers on high alert.
Of Taryn's companions, I find Liri to be the best written. She is personable, charismatic, loyal, and seems to be always sending signals Taryn's way of her interest in him. Trouble is, he is so socially inept, he doesn't recognize it.
Mae is a mystery of her own, but it almost seems like the author drops her mysterious angst somewhere in the middle of the tale. Perhaps it gets picked up in a later volume, I do not know.
Overall I find most of the main characters well-written, with a solid character base to work from. Some that appear later on suffer a bit, but it does not hurt the overall story much.
If I have a complaint, it is that Taryn is *always* musing and moping about his background. We get it, you don't know your heritage, now get over it for a couple chapters Would'ja? Another observation is that almost the entire story is about the elven society. Humans seldom interact at all, and dwarfs are just hinted at. Evidently there are several other races as well, but they only get mentioned during games of "Stratos", which could best be described as a game akin to chess, and a game to which one can easily become addicted. I am sure this single-race focus will change in future books.
The pacing for the most part is good, with lots of action. There are times, though, when some characters get mopey and wordy and things drag for a while, but it is not a long-term issue. It almost seemed to me , though, that the author was not sure where to end the first book. Near the end, I would end a chapter and feel that now the tale was at a good ending point. Then another chapter starts. This happened to me five or six times; I guess it's just a difference between my opinion where the book should end versus the author. Of course, the author wins.
Along the way there are several reveals that seem like they have been foreshadowed forever, but there are others that are quite unforeseen. That mix helps to keep the story at four stars for me.
I whole-heartedly recommend Elseerian as a good and fast-paced read, but it is a good bet you will want to go on in the series. Be forewarned.

I was immediately engrossed in this book! It was such an honest start. Taryn is such a fun Lead Character. He was orphaned on the Island of Sri Rosen,a Elven Training Ground to Master weapons. Both of his Parents passing away after their ship sinking off the coast. The only Link Taryn has to His Parents are 2 Swords. One named ,"Mazer" and the other," Ianna" and thus the adventure begins with Taryn leaving to find out about His Parents and about who He is.......and it turns about to be so much more!
The Cast is small, but everyone is memorable and each are enjoyable. The action is heavy and it really reminds me of R.A. Salvatore. My only real grip is I had a very hard time envisioning some of the Locations. Even though the Author spend a good portion of story explaining them,,some of them I simply could not envision them in my mind. But that was only about 2 places and didn't really detract from the story.
A highly enjoyable read.
I am currently finishing the third book of this series and so far I have greatly enjoyed this entire series. I have very recently finished the Thinblade Sovereign of the Seven Isles Book One series, The Wretched of Muirwood (Legends of Muirwood Book 1) series and the Wielder's Awakening (Wielder Trilogy) trilogy. This is the of the most entertaining series so far. This book has a great angle on the fantasy world of elves, dwarves and humans but of course there are hints of other stories or influences from series such as the Homeland The Dark Elf Trilogy, Part 1 (Forgotten Realms The Legend of Drizzt, Book I) (Bk. 1) series with the dark elves and his use of the double blades and being a blade master. However this story is very different and I have enjoyed it very much. Good read and would recommend to anyone who has enjoyed any of the series mentioned before.
I enjoyed this series immensely, and blew through all three in about a week.
Book 1 gets 4 stars, 2 & 3 get 5 stars. (on his site, Hale acknowleges he still thinks Elseerian could still use some work. Still a great read.)
I've been on a bit of a dry spell looking for new authors while waiting for new books from Brooks, Donaldson, Martin & the likes, and until I found this series, I was mostly disappointed.
These don't have the depth & detail you'll find in the above named authors, but at the same time it makes these books an enthralling and fast-paced read. Sometimes I find too much detail makes a book drag a little, and this series does anything but (not that I intend to stop reading the above named authors).
I will read anything Hale writes. I hope Lumineia is another Shanara, and I hope to read an extensive history of that land and it's heros & fiends.

After 59 years, this is the 3rd set of books I would recommend to and Fantasy, Sword and Sorcery lover. Ive read some very good books lately, but this series I thought were great. Loved the characters and the whole story line. If you expect fancy words from me , oyu are not going to get them. I'm just an old country boy, redneck who loves reading Fantasy. I've read thousands of books in my life. In that length of time I rate this series as 3rd all time. I can also say there are not many Authors books that I haven't read over the years. I loved the Wheel Of time series up until the last book, it totally turned me off. Because I loved this series so much. I have already bought White MAge, the 1st book in the next series. Thank you Ben Hale for such a great series.
